SCD offers a variety of ongoing, fun, and engaging volunteer opportunities per our commitment to educate and promote the sustainable use of natural resources within Spokane County. Our volunteer events can range from public outreach and education events, tree planting at restoration sites, stream/river clean-up, water quality monitoring, and wildlife habitat enhancements.  

During open hours, you can come into The Lab to ask questions, receive instruction, or work on your creative projects using our equipment. Available equipment includes the Glowforge 3D laser printer, laptops with Adobe Creative Cloud software for photo and video editing, an Elna 320 sewing machine, Project Memory equipment for digitizing your photo and video memories, and other available tools. Learn to tat lace in this three-part class. Tatting is a method of lace making that uses a handheld shuttle to create a series of knots and loops. You will receive supplies to get you started, a basic pattern, and live instruction from Kathleen Minniti, of the Shuttlebirds Tatting Guild. Adults Registration is required. You’re invited to an enlightening hour with highly acclaimed writer, journalist, broadcaster, and speaker Lisa Napoli as she discusses her group biography of the four women whose voices defined NPR, Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie: The Extraordinary Story of the Founding Mothers of NPR.   In the years after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, women in the workplace still found themselves relegated to secretarial positions or locked out of jobs entirely. This was especially true in the news business, a backwater of male chauvinism where a woman might be lucky to get a foothold on the “women’s pages.” But when a pioneering nonprofit called National Public Radio came along in the 1970s, and the door to serious journalism opened a crack, four remarkable women came along and blew it off the hinges. Susan, Linda, Nina, and Cokie is journalist Lisa Napoli’s captivating account of these four women, their deep and enduring friendships, and the trail they blazed to becoming icons. They had radically different stories. Cokie Roberts was born into a political dynasty, roamed the halls of Congress as a child, and felt a tug toward public service. Susan Stamberg, who had lived in India with her husband who worked for the State Department, was the first woman to anchor a nightly news program and pressed for accommodations to balance work and home life. Linda Wertheimer, the daughter of shopkeepers in New Mexico, fought her way to a scholarship and a spot on-air. Washington’s rural communities are rapidly changing. They were formerly reliant on working-class industries like mining, oil, and agriculture. Rural communities are experiencing an influx of wealthy urbanites looking for a different kind of experience that includes natural amenities, outdoor recreation, and cultural activities. But in doing so, these newcomers are causing new inequalities. Jennifer Sherman, professor of sociology, discusses both the glaring and the hidden effects of rural gentrification. Through the lens of a rural Washington community, Sherman explains how “class blindness” protects those with more privilege from fully recognizing social class inequalities. She advocates for the importance of getting to know the neighbors who are least like us so that together we can minimize destructive social divides. Adults JENNIFER SHERMAN (she/her) is a professor of sociology at Washington State University. Her qualitative research focuses on poverty and inequality, mainly in the rural Northwest. She is the author of two books, the most recent of which is titled Dividing Paradise: Rural Inequality and the Diminishing American Dream (2021), and the coeditor of the 2017 volume, Rural Poverty in the United States. Sherman lives in Moscow, Idaho. This talk is presented in partnership with Humanities Washington and The Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service, which educates citizens across the state about democratic institutions and public affairs and is based at Washington State University.
